Run your first check
Updated
A check answers one question: when a shopper asks an AI assistant where to buy your product, does your store get named? You run one by clicking New check and answering three things: which product, which location, which language. The check then asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Claude on your behalf and reports what they actually said. Your first product is free.
How do I run a check?
- Click New check. Open Mention Network in your Shopify admin. On Home, click New check to start the wizard.
- Choose a product. Pick one live product from your catalog. Use search if your catalog is long, then click Next: Location.
- Pick a location. Choose the city or the country your shopper would be asking from, then click Next: Language.
- Pick a target language. Choose the language your shoppers search in. English is the default.
- Click Check AI Visibility. This starts the check. It runs in the background, so you can stay on the screen or leave and come back to the report.
Which products can I check?
Any live product, meaning its status is Active and it is published to your Online Store sales channel.
Products that are not live still appear in the picker, greyed out with a Draft badge and a Publish link to the Shopify admin. This is not the app being fussy: a product that is not live has no public page, so there is nothing on the web for an AI assistant to find. The check would come back "not visible" every time, which tells you nothing about your store and only burns your credits. Publish the product first, then check it.
Each product also carries a badge for its check history:
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| New | You have not checked this product yet. |
| Checked | You have checked it before. You can check it again as often as you like, which is what you do after changing something, to see whether the change moved anything. |
| Draft | Not live, so it cannot be checked yet. Publish it first. |
Which location should I pick?
The one your customers are in, not the one you are in. A check measures a shopper asking from a specific place, so the location decides which competitors you are measured against: the stores an AI recommends for "where to buy this in Dubai" are not the stores it recommends for London.
You can pick a city or a whole country. Mention Network builds the location into the questions it asks, the same way a real shopper would, and passes it to the assistants as context. No VPN is involved.
Which language should I pick?
The language your shoppers ask in, which is not always the language you speak. English is the default.
This choice matters more than it looks, because it follows you into the Website Audit. Some of the trust signals the audit scores live on platforms that are English-language by nature, so if you check in another language the audit scores what it can and leaves those criteria out of the calculation rather than marking you down for them. If your market really does buy in English, picking English gives you the fullest picture.
How long does a check take?
A few minutes. Your product is put to four assistants across every shopper question, and they answer at their own pace, so the exact wait varies.
It runs in the background, so you do not have to sit and watch. The progress screen tells you which assistants have answered so far, and you are free to leave and come back: the report is waiting for you on Home when it is done.
What do I get at the end?
An AI Visibility Report for that one product, in that one location and language:
- A Verdict, from Not visible to Highly visible, with a Visibility Score and the number of AI answers that named you.
- AI Coverage: how many of the four assistants named your store at least once.
- Market Position: the stores AI recommends, with their prices and shipping next to yours.
- Breakdowns per assistant and per shopper question, and the original AI answers, word for word, as proof.
See Reading your report for what each of those means.
Can I check several products at once?
No. One check covers exactly one product, one location and one language. To cover another product or another market, run another check. Checking several at once is planned but not available yet.
Does Mention Network re-check on its own?
No. There are no scheduled re-checks running in the background, and nothing changes without you asking. When you have made an improvement and want to know whether it worked, run the check again yourself and compare.
